Almost 3 years since its debut, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is coming back to Netflix for season 2. The announcement was made at Anime Expo 2025 where CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger revealed early details about the new season.
Unlike the first season which was about the rise and fall of David Martinez, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will have an all new cast and story. According to the announcement the 10 episode sequel series is “a raw tale of redemption and revenge” set in the dark underbelly of Night City — the dystopian city at the heart of the Cyberpunk 2077 world.
“David is dead. But Night City lives on,” the show’s official synopsis declares.
New Creative Team, Same Grit
This time around, direction is in the hands of Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed the amazing “Girl on Fire” episode in the original series. He’s joined by Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Edgerunners) as lead character designer and long time Trigger veterans Masahiko Otsuka and Bartosz Sztybor — the latter returning as showrunner and lead writer.
During the panel, Sztybor was straight to the point:
“I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I’m a bit happy,” he said, teasing a follow-up that’s “darker, more bloody, and more raw.”
Sooner Than Expected?
No release date yet, but signs point to a faster production cycle this time. With key art already out and a trailer debuting during tonight’s Trigger panel at 8:30PM PT, it’s looking like the wait won’t be 2027.
The original Edgerunners was announced in 2020 but didn’t drop until 2022. This time around insiders say the turnaround could be under a year. Given the instant success of season one — 100% critic score and 95% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes — both Netflix and CD Projekt Red want to ride the wave.
From One-Off to Franchise Pillar
Originally a one-off story Edgerunners exceeded expectations and became one of Netflix’s best original anime. Its success revived interest in Cyberpunk 2077 and led to a sales bump and the greenlight for the sequel currently in development at CDPR.
We don’t know if Edgerunners 2 will be tied to the upcoming game sequel but some fans are speculating that they could plant some seeds in the new story.
“When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?” the new season’s tagline asks — a pointed question in a universe where violence and fame often walk hand in hand.
A Vibrant New Era for CDPR and Trigger
A follow-up had previously been doubtful due to Studio Trigger’s hectic schedule, but their return and CDPR’s reaffirmed dedication to the Cyberpunk IP show that Edgerunners is anything but a one-hit wonder. Expectations are high for a second season that pushes boundaries because of the animation studio’s distinctive visual style and a story team that isn’t afraid to go dark.
There is no doubt that Night City has more stories to tell.
