Tea, a popular app that allows women to anonymously share their experiences with men they’ve dated, confirmed on Friday that it suffered a data breach. The company reported that hackers exposed about 72,000 images online. This includes 13,000 selfies and ID photos submitted for account verification, as well as 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages that were visible within the app.
The company reassured its users that no email addresses or phone numbers were exposed. The breach only affected those who registered before February 2024.
In its statement, Tea explained that it had hired third-party cybersecurity experts and was working tirelessly to secure its systems. The company emphasized that, so far, there is no evidence suggesting any other user data was compromised. Protecting users’ privacy and data remains their highest priority.
Tea promotes itself as a safe space where women can anonymously vet men they may connect with on dating apps like Tinder or Bumble, ensuring their potential dates are genuine and not involved with other people.
Earlier reports from 404 Media revealed that 4Chan users discovered an exposed database, which allowed them to access the leaked materials. However, the company has since restricted access to the database. This week, Tea also announced on Instagram that its user base has grown to 4 million.
